Chuck Hagel for Defense Secretary - Bring it On!

Many in the American Jewish community are aghast to discover that President Obama is planning to appoint former Senator Chuck Hagel to serve as Defense Secretary. If you want the skinny on how Hagel has come to be known as one of the few ferociously anti-Israel senators in the past generation, Carl from Jerusalem at Israel Matzav provides it.

Meantime, all I can say is I don't understand how anyone can possibly be surprised. Shortly after word came out that Hagel is the frontrunner for the nomination, I read a quaint little blog post written by a conservative leaning commentator voicing her belief that Obama wouldn't want to risk his relations with Israel's supporters by appointing Hagel. But as Powerline pointed out today, this is the entire point of the nomination. Obama isn't stupid. He picks fights he thinks he can win. He hasn't always been right about those fights. He picked fights with Netanyahu thinking he could win, and he lost some of those.

But he is right to think he can win the Hagel fight. The Republican Senators aren't going to get into a fight with Obama about his DOD appointee, especially given that it's one of their fellow senators, even though many of them hate him. The Democrats are certainly not going to oppose him.

Obama wants to hurt Israel. He does not like Israel. He is appointing anti-Israel advisors and cabinet members not despite their anti-Israel positions, but because of them.

Some commentators said that Susan Rice would be bad because she was anti-Israel and they hoped that Obama would appoint someone pro-Israel. But John Kerry is no friend of Israel. And as far as I was concerned, we would have been better off with Rice on the job.

Unlike Kerry, Rice is politically inept. She walked into Sen. John McCain's office with the intention of convincing Sens. McCain, Lindsey Graham and Kelly Ayotte that she was competent to serve as Secretary of State despite the fact that she deliberately misled the public on what happened at the Sept. 11 jihadist attack on the US consulate in Benghazi.

But she failed. In commenting on the meeting, all three senators said they were more concerned after speaking with Rice than they were before they did. That is, they said she was a political incompetent. Can there be any doubt that Sen. Kerry will be able to play the politics of Capitol Hill far more effectively than Rice?

And what reason does anyone have to believe that Assad's great defender will be any more supportive of Israel than Rice would have been? But with him in the driver's seat now, instead of having a political incompetent whom no one can stand serving as the spokesman for Obama's anti-Israel foreign policy, in Kerry we will have a competent, reasonably popular politician on the job.

It's time for people to realize the game has changed. Obama won.

Obama won with 70 percent of the Jewish vote despite the fact that his record in his first term was more hostile to Israel than any president since Jimmy Carter. No one can expect him now, after his victory, to feel even slightly constrained in his desire to weaken the US relationship with Israel.

So far, he has made clear that he feels no constraints whatsoever. Take the Palestinians at the UN for example. Obama enabled the Palestinians to get their non-member state status at the UN by failing to threaten to cut off US funding to the UN in retaliation for such a vote.

Both Presidents Reagan and George H.W. Bush issued such threats during their tenures in office and so prevented the motion from coming to a vote. Given that the Palestinians have had an automatic majority in the General Assembly since at least 1975, the only reason their status was only upgraded in 2012 is because until then, either the PLO didn't feel like raising the issue or the US threatened to cut off its financial support to the UN if such a motion passed.  This year PLO chief Mahmoud Abbas said he wanted to have a vote and Obama responded by not issuing a threat to cut off UN funding. So the Palestinians got their vote and, as expected, it passed overwhelmingly.

Seeing the upgrade as a Palestinian move is a mistake. It was a joint Palestinian-American move.

And Obama made that move and no one balked. Indeed some New York Jews applauded it.

Let there be no doubt, Obama will get Hagel in at Defense. And Hagel will place Israel in his crosshairs.

The only way to foil Obama's ill intentions towards Israel even slightly is to be better at politics than he is. And he's awfully good.

Moreover, one of his strongest advantages is that Israel's supporters seem to have never gotten the memo. So here it is: Obama wants to fundamentally transform the US relationship with Israel.

He isn't playing by the old rules. He doesn't care about the so-called Israel lobby or the Jewish vote. As he sees it, to paraphrase Jim Baker, "F#&k the Jews, they voted for us anyway."

As strange as it may sound, I am slightly relieved by Hagel's appointment, and by my trust that Kerry will be a loyal mouthpiece of Obama's hostility. The more "in our faces" they are with their hostility, the smaller our ability to deny their hostility or pretend that we can continue to operate as if nothing has changed. As we face four more years of Obama - and four years of Obama unplugged -- the most urgent order of business for Israelis is to stop deluding ourselves in thinking that under Obama the US can be trusted.

So welcome aboard Secretary Hagel. Bring it on.

It never fails to amaze how self-delusional the Jews of the USA happen to be. Now Koch and other major Dems are aghast about Hagel and coming out against this nomination. Where were they for the last four years? Obama hates Israel, always had anti-Israel advisers, and just continued on the same course he always believed in. Israel take care of yourself, the Jews of the USA don't really care what happens to you stop worrying what they think about anything.

Once again 70% of America's Jews chose to bury their heads in the sand. Obama was reelected despite all obvious signs that he cares little or nothing about Israel and Jews in general. That he will appoint people like Chuck Hagel and John Kerry with known bias and hatred toward Israel comes as no surprise. At least I know I'm not shocked at his duplicity. Thanks for an honest assessment of American affairs. As you say it is now up to Israel to realize that she is on her own with only HaShem as a true partner.

Yes, Ms. Caroline, Ron Paul is pleased. The good news is, I think the Obama Revenge will ultimately fail, and miserably so. What can they do? How on earth can Obama/Kerry/Hagel push to recognize Hamas, which is what they want, after Meshaal's talk of never accepting Israel, ever. Besides, Obama's appointment of these clowns, who all have emnity for Israel, will convince The American Jewish supporters of Obama that they were played for suckers. Is it not obvious? When they try to do their first dirty, the scumbags are going to get a lesson which is going to make them REAL angry.
If they keep it up, The US Congress will cut the White House off and make it our version of Arafat's Hole; The American Mukata. Not literally, but virtually.
Also, despite the votes for Obama in The American Jewish community, these voting patterns should not be misconstrued as antipathy towards Israel. I voted for Mr. Romney, despite the fact that I believe Romney is one of the fat cats who has moved jobs out of The USA and allowed foreigners to steal our jobs/professions. As well, I believe Hamas' Meshaal's absurd refusal to give up the goal of destroying Israel ever, effectively destroyed J Street, Peace Now and Olmert/Livni in one fell swoop. Israel will get widespread support in The USA and Obama had better find a different scapegoat.
No, please don't worry. Be ready to mobilize for Israel at a moments notice.

Dear Caroline,
There are 3 vital issues;

1. Will the United States defend Israel in the event that the Syrian civil war spills over into Israel or its chemical weapons go missing. Answer; Yes!

2. Will the United States defend Israel in the event that sanctions do not stop Iran from its nuclear weapons production. Answer; Yes!

3. Will the United States attempt to play the role of mediator once again between Israelis and Palestinians in bridging differences enough to get both governments to the negotiating table. Answer; Yes!

Obama now has such confidence with his reelection, that he doesn't feel the need to camouflague his true intentions. The problem for the 70% seems to be their disbelief of Obama's agenda towards Israel, which gave Obama such an advantage.
It is obvious that the Obama team, old and soon to be, has bought into believing that the US national security is not connected to Israel's, but is better connected to the Muslim Brotherhood's. This is surely treasonist to the American people.
With regard to Israel, keep on making new economic alliances, stay strong, keep the faith, and yes, bring it on!

Sadly, my worst thoughts about this neo-marxist, anti-American, Jew hating, muslim loving metrosexual Barak O. have been realized. His destruction, however, has not been fully implemented, especially in those areas he dreams about transforming. One can hope his path will mirror that of his father's and an end will come to his dictatorship.

This man is evil in that his thoughts and inability to see any other perspectives, leaves him little choices, only his inner marching orders.

Much like the twisted thinking of the Conn young man who killed so many innocents, Obama's mind is just as rigid and corrupted.

Gird your loins!

American Jews are neither deluded nor have buried their heads in the sand. Rather, most are not that interested in Israel. Surveys of Jewish voters indicated that Israel was a low priority for most in deciding their votes in the recent U.S. presidential election. What is most important for most American Jews is to support liberal and left-wing policies and causes, and to uphold their self images as pure hearts and fighters for social "justice."
American Jews do not "have Israel's back." They cannot be counted on to support Israel. On the contrary, many of the most determined and obstinate anti-Israel opponents are themselves of Jewish background. Sure, get what help you can from the American Jews who do care about Israel, but forget the illusion that you can count on American Jews. Israel is on its own.

Fantastic article!

In the Netherlands we saw liberal minister of Foreign Affairs Uri Rosenthal (Israel friend) replaced by social-dimmocrat catholic Frans Timmermans (pro Hamas) The liberal-multicultural-socialist government he is part of is a weak cabinet with no majority in the senate, 2 extreme opposing party ideologies, dumb blonds as ministers etc. Within 2 months his social-democrat colleague ass. minister Verdaas had to resign for corruption and is replaced by a dumb ex ass. ministers that already left politics. The Freedom Party of mister Geert Wilders (PVV & opposition) is now for the 2nd week the biggest and poll leading party. Although this dimmie Patriot rockets to the Osman empire cabinet cannot hold long but I dare not speculate on near future PVV coalitions . I do advice to suspend civil admin for 10 years because chances are 90 % attempts to impeach Hussein Obama will fail and that he will run the worlds economies over the cliff with his ocean in US dollars, US-Chinese economic strangulation, raising the debt ceiling, Quantitative Ease IV, sequestration, Ocair etc.
The Robert Zubrin Mitch Romneys Energy Independence from islam oil in 2020 plan now wil proceed much to slow .. but proceed it will.
The manned F-35 is almost lilled (Canada) while Drones must be fitted energy saving. Tanks will be outdated by Drones too. So the Roosevelt military doctrine based on islam oil in return for manned fighter planes is dead !
But social processes linke fundamentalism and elite policies like muslim oil etc are separating and dividing the electorate.
Muslim fundamentalism is now in Arab parliaments or on the streets, Al Qaeda is according to Art Thompson (JBS) running Iraq, Nato will be drawn into Syria, Hussein Obama is psyopsed by the Muslim Brotherhood, Chris Christy, John McCain, Lindsey Graham etc are fine with the islam oil too.
Chances are that the Euro - one way or another - will go and than its up to the US to get rid of China. Within the Tea party they speculate that Hussein Obama will force a third term when Hillary Clinton will soon be out of that race for pretending fainting.
American States like Texas should follow Europe and pay less to the federal government or better secede.
Instead of building a American-Chino crony capitalist empire and a world wide Caliphate and a NWO OIC UN and a Weimar Euro ... small nation states like Israel and (the future Republic of) the Netherlands should work on Carbon nano Tubes, Nuclear Thermal Rockets, Hypersonic SCramjet technologies and accept that the United S most likely will perish

Many in the American Jewish community are aghast to discover that President Obama is planning to appoint former Senator Chuck Hagel to serve as Defense Secretary.

I would cynically comment that this was fully expected by not only the 30 percent of American Jews that voted against Obama but also many if not most of the 70 percent of American Jews who voted for him. There is such a thing as Jewish anti-Semites. Some are open in their anti-Semitism while others conceal their anti-Semitism behind the mask of anti-Zionism.

Obama wants to hurt Israel. He does not like Israel. He is appointing anti-Israel advisors and cabinet members not despite their anti-Israel positions, but because of them.

Does Obama have an issue with Jews specifically, or does his hostility stem from a belief that Israel is fundamentally immoral due to her being a vestige of European Colonialism?

Unlike Kerry, Rice is politically inept.

One can view Rice as inept when examined in light of traditional American values and by extension foreign policy. However, when viewed through the lens of radical leftism's anti-western civilization, anti-Americanism and anti-JudeoChristian values, the systematic toppling of more, or less pro-western governments in the "Arab Spring" begins to make more sense.

she deliberately misled the public on what happened at the Sept. 11 jihadist attack on the US consulate in Benghazi.

Bear in mind, there were other American casualties and survivors of the attack on the Benghazi consulate that the Obama administration absolutely refuses media and congressional access to.

This Republican misfit and others like him should bow out while they are out of the spotlight, never to be seen again. This is the big problem with politicians, they like to think they are more important then they are. They bore me to death!! Quit, will you Hagel and get a real job!!

Chuck Hagel is a thoroughly nasty piece of work. Yes, elections do have consequences and I agree with you, Susan Rice would've been less dangerous as Secretary of State. Now all Obama has to do is nominate Samantha Power to the U.N. ambassadorship and the noose will tighten even more. AS much as I despise him I wish Obama had nominated Colin Powell (if he was looking for a turncoat Republican).

As a friend said, this is from Hasejm. HaShem sent Obama to get Israel to wean off the US. Israel can, and should, stand alone. Anyway, she still has plenty of supporters, Jews and non Jews. We're in for a rough 4 years, with Obama in office. But I promise you: Israel is here to stay!

You are absolutely right. The question is what if anything can we who support Israel do to block these nefarious nominations?

Evil is most dangerous, when masked as light and "peace", but evil can never maintain those delusions. Israel will survive this, and other evil endeavors; but the USA administration is sadly moving ever closer to the cross hairs of God's judgment for betrayal of Israel.

If Israel is going to do anything about Iran, it's now or never. Obama and Hagel will block any future efforts to take action. The Mullahs will feel fully empowered with a friend at DOD. If Israeli action would delay Iran for at least four years, it should be done.

To Ed Koch: how 'effin stupid can you be? Schmuck.

Comments scare me more than some of my fears about Hagel although P. Salzman seems to have it right.

Thanks Caro, we were missing this kind of analytic view of the reality. Many People don't see it this way. Only time will prove you right.

Those leftist Jews in Europe and the US would do well to remember the words of Yasser Kashlak of the Free Palestine Movement:

“Gilad Schalit should go back to Paris and those murderers go back to Poland, and after that we will chase them until the ends of the earth to bring them to justice for their acts of slaughter from Deir Yassin until today.”

The Obama-supported new Caliphate's destruction of Israel will be just the first step in a world-wide ethnic cleansing operation. May they not awaken too late.

Most probably don't believe in Biblical eschatology, but the world's Jewry will one day be driven to repatriate to Israel. It is my belief the cause will be persecution.

Obama and his cohort of anti-Jews (Arabs are also Semites) will see to an escalating hatred and antipathy of Jewish folk in the US.

The thing that turns my stomach is the huge numbers of 'professing' Christians who will join their ranks.

Jews who continue to support Obama do not deserve to be called Jews! They have betrayed everything that the Torah stands for! They have also betrayed Israel and counted their heritage as nothing, as did Esau. One day these goats will be separated from the sheep!
