General Michael Hayden wrote an oped for CNN on Iran's nuclear program and the disparity between the US and Israeli assessments of the threat it poses.
Hayden served as the head of the NSA and the CIA under Bush 43. He now advises Mitt Romney.
In his oped, Hayden backs Obama's policy of waiting for incontrovertible evidence that Iran is actually building nuclear bombs before attacking and says it is in perfect alignment with Bush's policy. He also gives a strong defense of the 2007 National Intelligence Estimate on Iran. That document made the specious claim that Iran had abandoned its nuclear weapons program in 2003. In so doing, the NIE rendered it impossible for Bush to take any military action to block Iran's race to the bomb in the waning days of his presidency.
Hayden also argues that Obama proved that he has what it takes to make the hard call when he ordered the killing of Osama Bin Laden.
The fact that this is the view of Romney's adviser has to make you wonder why all the pro-Israel American Jewish policy wonks have been going after every Republican candidate other than Romney with such intensity. It's fine to support Romney or any other Republican over Obama. Certainly, Romney would be better for the US and the US economy than Obama.
But the fact is that while Romney is more pro-American than Obama is and would be friendlier to Israel and the US's other allies than Obama has been, he isn't that great on the issues that these Jewish pundits care about. He certainly isn't as strong as the other candidates including Rick Santorum and Newt Gingrich and before them Michele Bachmann and Rick Perry. He's okay. He's better than Obama. But he isn't the best the Republican field has offered. Certainly it makes sense to support him. But it makes no sense to go to to the mattresses for him against every other Republican contender.
But whether the Jennifer Rubins of the American Jewish punditocracy take note of the problem or not is secondary to whether Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu notices it.
The message that Hayden just transmitted to Netanyahu is very clear and it is crucial that Netanyahu hears it.
Hayden's oped is as clear a warning to Israel as Obama's statement to Medvedev about being more anti-American after he gets reelected. What Hayden just told us is that as far as Iran's nuclear weapons program is concerned, it doesn't matter who is in the White House in January 2013.
The only one Israel can count on to remove the threat of a nuclear Iran is the IDF. So if we think we can't abide by a nuclear armed Iran, we should stop talking about it and start bombing the facilities, now, when we still can.

When it comes to supporting a Republican candidate against Obama, yes, it's true that others besides Romney might be closer to Israel's positions regarding nuclear Iran. But where does the question of elect-ability come into the picture? At some point, wouldn't it behoove us to rally around Romney, acknowledging that he's likely the only candidate who stands a fighting chance to actually get himself elected (if for no other reason than the others have managed to acquire a reputation -- fair or not -- as either too "out there," imbalanced, or deficient)?
I fully agree with your statement "The only one Israel can count on to remove the threat of a nuclear Iran is the IDF."
While I agree that Hayden's statements are idiotic (but par for the course among foreign policy establishment types, whether nominally Democrat or Republican), I think Caroline is reading too much into this. In the U.S., a candidate running for his party's presidential nomination puts together lists of prominent "advisors" who do not necessarily give him any actual advice at all. The "advisors" are signed up to show that the candidate has support from reputable people in the party and from significant constituency groups in the party, not really to give advice. Hayden was a prominent official in the previous GOP administration, hence Romney, the establishment candidate, signed him up.
That said, it is true that Romney has no foreign policy experience and that it is doubtful that he has any strong views on Israel or any other foreign policy issue. As president, it is likely that he will gravitate to conventional establishment "wisdom" on foreign affairs absent strong political pressure to do something else. Even George W Bush ended his presidency with a renewed push to re-start the fraudulent "peace process."
Also, the sad fact is that, among the candidates for the GOP nomination this year, Romney is the only one with any chance of winning the general election - and even he is a long shot. Gingrich, Santorum, Perry (who withdrew), and others may sound better than Romney on Israel, but they simply are not presidential material, by reason of deficiencies in intelligence, knowledge, presence, judgment, sanity, or some combination of the foregoing. The United States is not the country it once was, and only a minority of voters see the current president and his gargoyles in the Executive Branch and Congress for what they really are. If the GOP nominates a candidate seen as nutty, flaky, creepy, or dim-witted, the election's over.
'The only one Israel can count on to remove the threat of a nuclear Iran is the IDF.'
That takes Jewish leadership who put Israel's security above the globalist agenda and there is none to be found, they are all lap dogs of their imperial masters.
Israel's destiny is tied to the LORD not to perverted, decadent soon to be destroyed America,
Netanyahu has proven to be a follower who always capitulates and gets on his knees to his overlords.
Will the IDF be too busy serving the agenda of the Fourth Reich Quartet gods Israel serves, bulldozing and tearing down Jewish homes in Migron to bother with Iran ?
With Israel serving foreign gods under faith challenged grasshopper rule anything is possible.
When is Israel going to stop acting like little, fearful grasshoppers and stop looking west to worthless, corrupt, backstabbing,
collapsing Washington and start looking to God alone ?
My guess is that it will take unimaginable disaster to awaken those who think America is Israel's God to serve and obey foremost.
I'll cast my vote with Shmuel's comments. Unfortunately the GOP can't seem to come up with some really refreshing and insightful candidates that voters could get excited about other than the usual cast of worn out political retreads. Fortunately U.S. Presidents aren't kings in spite of what the incumbent thinks. As for me, I find it disconcerting to see Israeli leadership continue to bow to America for permission to act in it's own self defense. Israel will probably never be viewed as the nice guy by the rest of the players, who cares? We all know that nice guys finish last!
"But whether the Jennifer Rubins of the American Jewish punditocracy take note of the problem or not" - Whereas the voting both in the US and Israel becomes more and more tribal (the blacks and Hispanics in the former and the Arabs in the latter), the Jewish vote goes in the opposite direction - of universalism and cosmopolitanism, to the point of renouncing all national affiliation and responsibility. This trend, if not stopped, will end in a disaster.
Isn't it sad when you realize that your intelligence community has been penetrated by enemies? That 2003 NIE was constructed for just that purpose, to prevent action and create pressure and political advantage, which benefited the other party and the enemies of both Israel and the United States. It seems we have more enemies within than just Mr. Obama. Israel it seems, is not immune from them as well and has her own complement of internal enemies. It's probably coincidence that they are all at the same levels and positions.
A better trap might have been constructed but I think this one is adequate. Other than ideology and the seizure of power by the left, I can't think of a motive to construct it. I don't want to see a nuclear exchange but it would appear that is a likelihood, since the 'former' Soviets are suddenly infatuated with moving troops into the area, for security reasons, of course. You can bet that Mr. Obama will offer help just when it is too late to do any good. Of course the media are on his side, are the left's muscle as well, so everything will be blamed on Israel.
There are many millions of Christians who know these things and are not swayed by lies.
I thought Bolton was supposed to be Romney's foreign policy deep thinker. Has he been eclipsed already?
When you think Romney, think Eisenhower, Bush I and late Bush II. That said, we have no idea what Obama might do in a second term. How about Samantha Powers' plan to "liberate" Judea and Samaria by threats or actual use of US troops? How about an American-supported pan Arab attack on Israel? How about American action to prevent an Israeli second-strike in the event of an Iranian nuclear attack?
What most people don't understand is the extent of Obama's hostility. Israel has an opportunity to force both Obama and Romney to support and even aid in an attack on Iranian nuclear facilities before November. After that, all bets are off for Israel.
Romney does not have foriegn policy experience, but he has beliefs and an upbringing guided by values. He has said Isreal is America's friend. He has maintained a steady persona. He was not made into someone. Any of the top three Republican candidates will be there for Isreal. One thing none of them are is they are not the current occupant.
Where do you refuel, where is your flight path, and where is the element of surprise? I know these are annoying questions but I think you are living in fantasy land.
Caroline excellent assessment. Unfortunately as you note none of the Republican candidates are stellar and Romney being the best of the lot almost completely assures us of another four years of the Obamanation in the White House. There is no question that Israel stands alone now more than ever. Her future and the future of the entire Jewish world is at stake. It's time for us to stop trying to appease our enemies and use the strength that G-d has given us in order to survive.
Hi Caroline, As always your commentary is spot on. Even though Romney will likely get the Republican nomination he would not be as tough on Iran as Newt or Rick Santorum. I still don't understand the mindset for waiting to attack Iran until there is clear evidence they are actually building a nuclear bomb when Iran is clearly constructing all the components and refining the nuclear material to put a nuclear bomb together. The US attacked Iraq because Iraq was in possession of chemical weapons of mass destruction and would not give them up. They were probably transported to Syria with Russia's assistance. What Iran is doing is a quantum leap worse and we just sit and do nothing of real consequence. Not bombing Iran now is far worse than waiting until later. With Obama's latest "hot mike" reveal about warming up to Putin about missile defense it is clear traditional American allies are being rejected by Obama. Israel should not trust Obama.
Oh yes, and don't be horribly concerned about the re-election of Obama. He's supposed to be "unbeatable" but apparently that is based upon wishful thinking and attempted manipulation of the vote before this general election. They are trying their best to talk republican voters from showing up. My understanding is that they are failing massively and are worried sick about it. You can expect to see them rush everything they want to do, in case they lose, as always.
Right now, except in media and circles of academia, a ripe and full diaper could beat Obama. When you hear that 72% percent of people want Obama-care repealed, that's how bad it is for them, right now.
100% correct, Caroline! As for the nay-sayers who say it can't be done, we have someone very powerful on our side. He gave us all the tools we need to succeed. Evil doers and enablers will be defeated.
The NIE in 2007 was a deliberate decepyion by the "Shadow Warriors" and Arabists in the U.S. Government. It was an outright lie and everybody knew it then.
Total bullshit, Mitt Romney is the right man to take care of this problem along with fix the mess this country is in. Romney isn't even close to being like Obama and will not make a ruling until he gets into office and sees where we are from there. The jewish people like him and know that Mitt Romney stands behind Israel
Dear "chief gumption-keeper" Caroline, and friends,
How I wish I had at least a tenth of your knowledge and could write half as well as you! But I am grateful enough that you are one of the few informing us in America about the conditions there in Israel. Thank you so much!
Today I bought your book, Shackled Warrior. And while I know I will enjoy it, I also know it will most likely break my heart and piss me off at the insanity that seems to be running the world at the centers of power everywhere.
from your friend Jamie MacPherson
P.S. I tell all my friends about you, and they admire your work. Please don't write me off. Please post my comments again someday. I'm not writing ya'll off. Please just consider the remainder of my thoughts below.
Why will the crime of anti-semitism not die now and forever? It's persisted for millenia. You undoubtedly have pondered this - perhaps even discussed it together. Here is my short two-cents.
There actually *is* a spirit who hates God (i.e. the snake in Genesis 3) and wants to undermine Him by wiping out those to whom certain lands were promised (the off-spring of Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and David).
Somehow, that evil spirit influences and incites certain strands of humanity. It's thoroughly irrational. Some whites have an irrational hatred of all blacks. That is the ONLY sense that I think can be made of anything so irrational to persist sooo long. On the other hand when, did any family line ever return to their land after hundreds of years as is proclaimed throughout the Torah, nebi'im, and ketubim?! Couldn't it be true that it was known in advance and written down for our benefit? I think it is true.
If you are wondering whether I believe Y'shua of Nazareth is the Messiah of Israel, it's true, I do, but even if I am wrong about that, it is the God of Abraham that I admire and with whom I hope we find favor when we die, and may He help us to receive His kindness on our judgement day.
Thanks.
According to the Free Beacon, the Obamites are engaged in a campaign to thwart any Israeli attack. There is a hint that the US may be giving Iran Israeli military specs and doctrine? This is sick.
Michael Hayden was director of the CIA but so was James Woolsey and 43. It is also a fact that 43 had a tomato tomaattoo I don't know clown as vice. 43 like Edgar hoover had an address book with names like the Bin Laden family. One should also ask what Hayden really understood of Richard Helms and MKULTRA or Eisenhower's military-industrial complex, a formidable union of defense contractors and the armed forces ... projected in the 21st century between Saudi oil and the US army to be able to fight 2 wars for a long period at the same time or the agreement to pay oil in USD. I am not saying Hayden is a clown ... but brilliant people can make huge mistakes too.
As to has 'assessments' they belong under those of Zbigniew Brzezinski, retired Army Maj. Gen. Paul Eaton, retired Army Lt. Gen. Robert G. Gard Jr., retired Marine Gen. Joseph Hoar, retired Army Brig. Gen. John H. Johns, retired Army Maj. Gen. Rudolph Ostovich III, former deputy director of National Intelligence for analysis Thomas Fingar, former CIA national intelligence officer Paul Pillar, and retired Army Col. Lawrence Wilkerson, Marine General James Cartwright etc.
After all, the OSS was punished after the WWII for Pearl Harbor and named the CIA under Dulles and Sidney MKULTRA Gottlieb.
A lot has been discussed this week on the birth certificate Kenian and has atom bombs for his re-election so it is clear even to the republicans that they have a clown as President. And that's what America in all evil became all about after the degenerated South Italian mafia families came on that continent early 20th century and conquered the FBI.
Romney is psychologically absent. Anyone can see that. It is result of his clique around him. Romney is cultivated like Howard Hughes. He can't focus on the fundamentals of geo-politics. Donald Nuke Trump could neither and left to my embarrassment the American lady Bachmann to be slaughtered.
