I was out sick yesterday so I was unable to write today's column for the Jerusalem Post. I did manage to watch President Obama's speech on the Middle East yesterday evening. And I didn't want to wait until next week to discuss it. After all, who knows what he'll do by Tuesday?
Before we get into what the speech means for Israel, it is important to consider what it means for America.
Quite simply, Obama's speech represents the effective renunciation of the US's right to have and to pursue national interests. Consequently, his speech imperils the real interests that the US has in the region - first and foremost, the US's interest in securing its national security.
Obama's renunciation of the US national interests unfolded as follows:
First, Obama mentioned a number of core US interests in the region. In his view these are: "Countering terrorism and stopping the spread of nuclear weapons; securing the free flow of commerce, and safe-guarding the security of the region; standing up for Israel's security and pursuing Arab-Israeli peace."
Then he said, "Yet we must acknowledge that a strategy based solely upon the narrow pursuit of these interests will not fill an empty stomach or allow someone to speak their mind."
While this is true enough, Obama went on to say that the Arabs have good reason to hate the US and that it is up to the US to put its national interests aside in the interest of making them like America. As he put it, "a failure to change our approach threatens a deepening spiral of division between the United States and Muslim communities."
And you know what that means. If the US doesn't end the "spiral of division," (sounds sort of like "spiral of violence" doesn't it?), then the Muslims will come after America. So the US better straighten up and fly right.
And how does it do that? Well, by courting the Muslim Brotherhood which spawned Al Qaeda, Hamas, Jamma Islamiya and a number of other terror groups and is allies with Hezbollah.
How do we know this is Obama's plan? Because right after he said that the US needs to end the "spiral of division," he recalled his speech in Egypt in June 2009 when he spoke at the Brotherhood controlled Al Azhar University and made sure that Brotherhood members were in the audience in a direct diplomatic assault on US ally Hosni Mubarak.
And of course, intimations of Obama's plan to woo and appease the jihadists appear throughout the speech. For instance:
"There will be times when our short term interests do not align perfectly with our long term vision of the region."
So US short term interests, like for instance preventing terrorist attacks against itself or its interests, will have to be sacrificed for the greater good of bringing the Muslim Brotherhood to power in democratic elections.
And he also said that the US will "support the governments that will be elected later this year" in Egypt and Tunisia. But why would the US support governments controlled by the Muslim Brotherhood? They are poised to control the elected government in Egypt and are the ticket to beat in Tunisia as well.
Then there is the way Obama abandoned US allies Yemen and Bahrain in order to show the US's lack of hypocrisy. As he presented it, the US will not demand from its enemies Syria and Iran that which it doesn't demand from its friends.
While this sounds fair, it is anything but fair. The fact is that if you don't distinguish between your allies and your enemies then you betray your allies and side with your enemies. Bahrain and Yemen need US support to survive. Iran and Syria do not. So when he removes US support from the former, his action redounds to the direct benefit of the latter.
I hope the US Navy's 5th Fleet has found alternate digs because Obama just opened the door for Iran to take over Bahrain. He also invited al Qaeda - which he falsely claimed is a spent force - to take over Yemen.
Beyond his abandonment of Bahrain and Yemen, in claiming that the US mustn't distinguish between its allies and its foes, Obama made clear that he has renounced the US's right to have and pursue national interests. If you can't favor your allies against your enemies then you cannot defend your national interests. And if you cannot defend your national interests then you renounce your right to have them.
As for Iran, in his speech, Obama effectively abandoned the pursuit of the US's core interest of preventing nuclear proliferation. All he had to say about Iran's openly genocidal nuclear program is, "Our opposition to Iran's intolerance - as well as its illicit nuclear program, and its sponsorship of terror - is well known."
Well so is my opposition to all of that, and so is yours. But unlike us, Obama is supposed to do something about it. And by putting the gravest threat the US presently faces from the Middle East in the passive voice, he made clear that actually, the US isn't going to do anything about it.
In short, every American who is concerned about the security of the United States should be livid. The US President just abandoned his responsibility to defend the country and its interests in the interest of coddling the US's worst enemies.
AS FOR ISRAEL, in a way, Obama did Israel a favor by giving this speech. By abandoning even a semblance of friendliness, he has told us that we have nothing whatsoever to gain by trying to make him like us. Obama didn't even say that he would oppose the Palestinians' plan to get the UN Security Council to pass a resolution in support for Palestinian independence. All he said was that it is a dumb idea.
Obama sided with Hamas against Israel by acting as though its partnership with Fatah is just a little problem that has to be sorted out to reassure the paranoid Jews. Or as he put it, "the recent announcement of an agreement between Fatah and Hamas raises profound and legitimate questions for Israel."
Hamas is a jihadist movement dedicated to the annihilation of the Jewish people, and the establishment of a global caliphate. It's in their charter. And all Obama said of the movement that has now taken over the Palestinian Authority was, "Palestinian leaders will not achieve peace or prosperity if Hamas insists on a path of terror and rejection."
Irrelevant and untrue.
It is irrelevant because obviously the Palestinians don't want peace. That's why they just formed a government dedicated to Israel's destruction.
As for being untrue, Obama's speech makes clear that they have no reason to fear a loss of prosperity. After all, by failing to mention that US law bars the US government from funding an entity which includes Hamas, he made clear that the US will continue to bankroll the Hamas-controlled Palestinian Authority. So too, the EU will continue to join the US in giving them billions for bombs and patronage jobs. The Palestinians have nothing to worry about. They will continue to be rewarded regardless of what they do.
Then of course there are all the hostile, hateful details of the speech:
He said Israel has to concede its right to defensible borders as a precondition for negotiations;
He didn't say he opposes the Palestinian demand for open immigration of millions of foreign Arabs into Israel;
He again ignored Bush's 2004 letter to Sharon opposing a return to the 1949 armistice lines, supporting the large settlements, defensible borders and opposing mass Arab immigration into Israel;
He said he was leaving Jerusalem out but actually brought it in by calling for an Israeli retreat to the 1949 lines;
He called for Israel to be cut in two when he called for the Palestinians state to be contiguous;
He called for Israel to withdraw from the Jordan Valley - without which it is powerless against invasion - by saying that the Palestinian State will have an international border with Jordan.
Conceptually and substantively, Obama abandoned the US alliance with Israel. The rest of his words - security arrangements, demilitarized Palestinian state and the rest of it - were nothing more than filler to please empty-headed liberal Jews in America so they can feel comfortable signing checks for him again.
Indeed, even his seemingly pro-Israel call for security arrangements in a final peace deal involved sticking it to Israel. Obama said, "The full and phased withdrawal of Israeli military forces should be coordinated with the assumption of Palestinian security responsibility in a sovereign, non-militarized state."
What does that mean "with the assumption of Palestinian security responsibility?"
It means we have to assume everything will be terrific.
All of this means is that if Prime Minister Netanyahu was planning to be nice to Obama, and pretend that everything is terrific with the administration, he should just forget about it. He needn't attack Obama. Let the Republicans do that.
But both in his speech to AIPAC and his address to Congress, he should very forthrightly tell the truth about the nature of the populist movements in the Middle East, the danger of a nuclear Iran, the Palestinians' commitment to Israel's destruction; the lie of the so-called peace process; the importance of standing by allies; and the critical importance of a strong Israel to US national security.
He has nothing to gain and everything to lose by playing by the rules that Obama is trying to set for him.

With the stupidity of voting for a party rather than a candidate who was and remains clueless of world affairs we Jews have aided and abetted the unleashing of a demon. There is no better term for someone who has turned the world as we know it upside down. This has become a world where allies have been abandoned and enemies stand in line to beat down our doors. Netanyahu has a daunting job ahead of him this coming week. He must stand firm against the raging tide led by Obama that seeks to annihilate Israel and by extension all Jews, and also make it abundantly clear that we are prepared to fight for what is rightfully ours. Abba Eban described the fragility of Israel's 1949-1967 boundaries as Israel's "Auschwitz" lines. Therefore, US and Israeli papers should have come up with the following headline: Obama Endorses Israel's “Auschwitz” Borders . If Abba Eban could say it, why can’t they?

As an American who is horrified by most everything Obama and his cronies have done, plan to do, wish they could do, etc....well stated, Caroline Glick! More American Jews should adopt your stance, before it's too late. Yet, they continue to drink liberal Kool-Aid, at their own expense. Israel is the last bastion of freedom and democracy in the Middle East, and yeah, it IS better than the rest there. Why? Well, for lots of reasons, but from an American point of view, we don't have any real friends and allies in that region of the world EXCEPT for Israel. And no amount of apologizing and genuflecting on Obama's part will turn adversaries into friends. Period. I literally cannot wait for 2012, so that we can at least give it our best try to get rid of him. People compare him to Jimmy Carter, but he's way worse. He's weak, he clearly dislikes his own country, AND he's militant about it. That is dangerous...

I realize this is an oversimplification of Netanyahu's response but Zero is a simple man. He'll simply nod and respond by saying, "You're welcome and indeed I am committed to the two-state solution."
It seems that Israel's PM will not alter his course under any circumstances. No matter the hostility he encounters, he'll never provide a full-throated, rational defense of Israel and denunciation of the evil that surrounds it.

You can perfectly read this notion from Obama the other way. So that the long term vision (democratic Middle East) has to be sacrificed for the short term interest (preventing terrorism) Here I dont see the point.

I am an angry man this morning. I will remain angry for the foreseeable future. The betrayal of our Israeli friends and the state of Israel is an intolerable offense which I will not abide. This president has has shown, that there is nothing he will not do to harm our country in the world, and especially our relations with what allies we have left. I repudiate and condemn him and any who stand with him.
I hold you responsible for conveying my anger to him.
If you choose to side with him against Israel and support what he is doing to her I will remember and steadfastly work for your removal from office. I'd mention God at some point here but I've come to realize that most of the people who go to Washington, either don't believe in him or can't remember him during their consideration of any consequential matters. Supporting this president makes you an enemy of God and millions of us will remember that you did so.
The shock of this is just now wearing off. It will be followed by profound anger and there will be no bargaining or acceptance.

It amazes me that Jewish people, above all others, put their faith in a party that, to say no more, is unserious about national defense, and thinks tyrants like those in Iran and Syria can be reasoned with.
Oh, but what about the Bin Laden takedown, they say, isn't that proof Democracts can be realistic? I say it was nothing more than a political expedient. If Obama had not approved the strike and that had gotten out, he would have been toast in 2012. In fact, the strike is the exception that proves the rule about the Democratic Party.
How can a people who have suffered so much in their history, who know the worst of what humankind can do, put their faith in such naive leaders?
Given this, the question to be asked now is, at what point does this misplaced faith jeopardize the survival of the Jewish state? Personally I think we've reached it.

My solution is that the United States should negotiate a bilateral treaty with Israel that, in the event of an attack on it, makes explicit the violence we will visit on the aggressors in such an event.

How and why did the USA become the official and final arbiter of Israel's borders? Everybody assumes that. But why?
The League of Nations Mandate designated Israel's borders long ago. The British illegally grabbed a big chunk of Jewish land to create Jordan. And now, many decades later, the same players are demanding a further shrinkage of Israel. What rights do they have?

As recently as February 23 the Knesset voted against the National Union's bill for annexation of Judea and Samaria. I just saw the Netanyahu - birth & death certificate kenian talks (CNN) and I am not impressed because I read your article above and that of Frank (CSP) on Muslim Brotherhood Outreach 2.0 The Kenian must leave the scene and we have to hold out until nov 12 or an impeachment earlier.
I suspect a vast majority of Americans feel as I do today regarding our President: incredibly furious, frustrated and with a feeling of helplessness. My jaw dropped when I learned about his latest assault on our dear friends in Israel. I would say that nothing this man does surprises me, but when the next thing happens I cant help but to feel shocked and surprised. Israel: even though I have never visited you I have such admiration for your society, your culture and your people. Even though our administration has betrayed you, understand the American people have not. I too will write my Representative (who is AWESOME and totally supports Israel -- Allen West, ex-military, look him up) and my Senators to express my contempt. I won't waste my time with a message to our President.
Caroline - superb job of dissecting the coded messages in the unfortunate message delivered by Mr. Obama (I'm trying to be respectful to the office by calling him Mr. Obama - it's NOT easy when you despise *everything* he stands for ... biting my lip hard). As Mark Levin (who turned me on to your writings) points out, scrutinizing language is critical to understanding, and you have broken down and analyzed it better than anyone. Thank you for giving us these very important insights (esp. to those of us who don't fully understand the geo-political details of your region) and unfortunately further confirming our fears.

When I read a snippet of the speech yesterday, what struck me is the boldness of presentation. The comments here are representative of a lot of US citizens.
I could go on but mainly, I am glad I found this site as it bolsters my belief that there are Israelis who see and disagree with what is happening. Also there are Americans who see and disagree.
We need to pray for the leaders there for Courage! You have the Almighty God on your side! Don't forget that. Many are praying for Jerusalem and all the Jewish people.

That's the best appreciation of the situation I've read.
It is really pitiable that the United States managed to elect such a worthless and evil leader. It's the inherent weakness of a free society: to freely elect the means of its destruction.
I might, under other circumstances, attribute his decisions to a mere difference of opinion about how to proceed, but the malice that underlies most of his political actions is all too obvious. You'll notice that he never tries to create a win-win situation or come to an amicable compromise--never. His inherent nature is totalitarian.
Early on, I recognized him for what he was and so did not vote for him. Unfortunately, I could not convince more of my compatriots to understand his true identity; they bought his benign appearance and the portrait of him promulgated by the state media, the ommissions of fact. Many of them still wouldn't believe a bad thing about Obama if he confessed it to them personally.
Anyway, I stand with Israel. Most Americans do.
Interesting that the god worshipped by the people of Jericho in Joshua's day is the same one worshipped by the Muslims today - the god of the crescent moon.

Thank you for all your great work. My prayers are with you and your family. I agree with your point, Obama did Israel a favor with that speech; Bibi got the message. He slammed our man-child during the press conferance today. Rush Limbaugh was praising Netanyahu all afternoon. The clips I heard were fantastic. Rush's idea was to find a birth certificate in Hawii for Bibi so we can get him on our '12 ticket. How about Bibi/Palin '12?

I am interested in a side-issue. Is Livni and her wretched party really "bought" by Obama as thry clearly unbeatable in power-hungryness or are they bluffing?? By bluffing I mean that they would indeed not give in to Obama's dictat were they the governing party. Or, if they really are dhimmis of Obama, it's actually 1000 percent worse. Either way, I believe Livni & Co. are TRAITORS!
The main reason Arab's seek American favour is because it is the only nation that is able to influence Israel to make concessions to the Arabs. From this it follows, that the more Israel gives, the less it has to give, which then lessens the influence America has in the Arab world.
It is the stated intention of Obama to weaken the influence of the USA. By trying to destroy Israel, he kills two birds with one stone.

It looks like the Israeli Jews are going to have to find another country to take them. Maybe they can swap places with the 5 million muslims in France.
Alternatively maybe the Jews can arrange to leave "en masse" in the middle of the night and nuke all the urban areas on the way out. The arabs would have: "driven the Jews into the sea" and "liberated palestine" but their prize would turn to ashes in their mouths.

Netanyahu did good. I didn't expect it. When I saw the joint press conference (which I've now seen several times), my respect for Netanyahu went up considerably. He caught Obama by surprise - Obama thought he would ambush Netanyahu only to be ambushed himself. Very slick performance, admirable.

Borders
I think for there to be peace, the Palestinians will have to accept some basic realities. The first is that while Israel is prepared to make generous compromises for peace, it cannot go back to the 1967 lines -- because these lines are indefensible; because they don’t take into account certain changes that have taken place on the ground, demographic changes that have taken place over the last 44 years.
Remember that, before 1967, Israel was all of nine miles wide. It was half the width of the Washington Beltway. And these were not the boundaries of peace; they were the boundaries of repeated wars, because the attack on Israel was so attractive.
So we can't go back to those indefensible lines, and we're going to have to have a long-term military presence along the Jordan.
Hamas
The second is -- echoes something the President just said, and that is that Israel cannot negotiate with a Palestinian government that is backed by Hamas. Hamas, as the President said, is a terrorist organization committed to Israel’s destruction. It’s fired thousands of rockets on our cities, on our children. It’s recently fired an anti-tank rocket at a yellow school bus, killing a 16-year-old boy. And Hamas has just attacked you, Mr.President, and the United States for ridding the world of bin Laden.
So Israel obviously cannot be asked to negotiate with a government that is backed by the Palestinian version of al Qaeda
Refugees
The third reality is that the Palestinian refugee problem will have to be resolved in the context of a Palestinian state, but certainly not in the borders of Israel.
The Arab attack in 1948 on Israel resulted in two refugee problems -- Palestinian refugee problem and Jewish refugees, roughly the same number, who were expelled from Arab lands. Now, tiny Israel absorbed the Jewish refugees, but the vast Arab world refused to absorb the Palestinian refugees. Now, 63 years later, the Palestinians come to us and they say to Israel, accept the grandchildren, really, and the great grandchildren of these refugees, thereby wiping out Israel’s future as a Jewish state.
So it’s not going to happen. Everybody knows it’s not going to happen. And I think it’s time to tell the Palestinians forthrightly it’s not going to happen. The Palestinian refugee problem has to be resolved. It can be resolved, and it will be resolved if the Palestinians choose to do so in a Palestinian state. So that's a real possibility. But it’s not going to be resolved within the Jewish state.

Israel must reject this ultimatum from our enemy in the whitehouse and let our friends in Gaza understand that the next time they begin a war with Israel, they will have to fly their missiles from the other side of the border with Egypt.
Yes to peace. Yes to allowing arabs to live in peace with Israel, but only on condition that they leave us in peace.
If arabs wish to fight Israel let them do it against Israel's defensible borders.
The stronger Israel is, the less inclined arabs are to attack and therefore the greater the peace in the region. The west has lost its will to defend itself against militant islam but Israel can not afford to follow suit. It is the tripwire for the west and must instead sound the alarm, not just for its own sake.
So my plan for peace is that Israel advances its borders against any state that attacks it until it deems that border defensible. So if Hezbollah attacks Israel must advance until the natural defensible border of the Litani, and make sure that no hostile elements remain to terrorise its army in the rear as happened to terrible effect in the past.
If Egypt as threatened tears up its peace treaty and attacks again, Israel must advance at least to the far side of the Gidi and Mitla passes in the Sinai. If Jordan attacks then Israel should stay put and obliterate it, as Israel already has a defensible border there (unless Obama gets his way).
So welcome to the middle-east. Peace lasts as long as you can stick up for yourself. And that's Obama's problem. How can this great friend of Said and Ali Abunimah of the 'electronic intifada' weaken Israel enough so that his palestinian friends and their allies can make Israel disappear.

Caroline, finally someone, you in this instance, recognizes that our President of the USA doesn't like his own country and is working to change it in ways many of us don't support nor do we accept his ways. Israel now has to face up to the fact that any support it gets from America is solely from its individuals and not from its government. I hope a new proudly American government takes over on January 20, 2013, but Israel should not depend on that happening. Israel needs to stand strong by itself with whatever help it can get from others who love freedom and believe in God.

My question to you is: as part of the fallout from Obama's speech, should Israel also vigorously pursue diplomatic backdoor channels to try to get a September UN veto from Russia and China? I believe neither country would be extremely happy with a Palestinian state because it would create domestic problems for both as they fight the Chechnyans and Uyghurs. That way, Israel wouldn't be so dependent on just the Americans to get a veto in the UN Security Council.
Also, quick follow-up: who (in the U.N.) can point out the obvious, namely that before the issue of Palestinian statehood can be brought up in the General Assembly, it needs to cleared by the Security Council?

I believe the President saw the demise of Osama bin Laden as an opportunity. With his anti-terror cred firmly established, he now has cover to do what he really wants in the Middle East: sell out Israel.

This is the first time I have had the pleasure of reading one of your articles. Whether you are home sick with a cold, or not, you crafted an excellent, in depth, dissection of the politicks of America's own wily "Dear Leader". Every time I think BHO has hit rock bottom, that he can do nothing worse, an invisible trap door springs open beneath him and America plunges into deeper, more desperate, despair. Even a cursory examination of BHO’s track record, will lead any reasonable observer to conclude that President Obama wants to see America fail.
