Playing Israel's good hand

On Wednesday night, Israelis received our first taste of the new Middle East with the missile strikes on Beersheba. Iran's Palestinian proxy, the local branch of the Muslim Brotherhood known as Hamas, carried out its latest war crime right after Iran's battleships entered Syria's Latakia port.

Their voyage through the Suez Canal to Syria was an unadulterated triumph for the mullahs.

For the first time since the 1979 Islamic Revolution, Iran's warships sailed across the canal without even being inspected by the Egyptian, US or Israeli navies.

On the diplomatic front, the Iranian-dominated new Middle East has had a pronounced impact on the Western-backed Fatah-led Palestinian Authority's political posture towards the US. The PA picked a fight with America just after the Obama administration forced Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak to surrender power. Mubarak's departure was a strategic victory for the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt and for its sister branch Hamas in Gaza.

As part of his efforts to neutralize the threat the Muslim Brotherhood posed to his regime, Mubarak sealed off Gaza's border with Egypt after Hamas seized power there in June 2007.
The Gaza-Sinai border was breached during last month's revolution. Since Mubarak's forced resignation, the military junta now leading Egypt has failed to reseal it.

The revolution in Egypt happened just after the PA was thrown into a state of disarray. Al- Jazeera's exposure of PA documents indicating the leadership's willingness to make minor compromises with Israel in the framework of a peace deal served to discredit Fatah leaders in the eyes of the Israel-hating Palestinian public.

In the wake of the Al-Jazeera revelations, senior PA leaders escalated their anti-Israel and anti- American pronouncements. The PA's chief negotiator Saeb Erekat was forced to resign.

The shift in the regional power balance following Mubarak's fall has caused Fatah leaders to view their ties to the US as a strategic liability. If they wish to survive, they must cut a deal with Hamas. And to convince Hamas to cut a deal, they need to abandon the US.

And so they have. Fatah's first significant move to part company with Washington came with its relentless bid to force a vote on a resolution condemning Israeli construction in Jerusalem, Judea and Samaria at the UN Security Council. In an attempt to avert a vote on the resolution that the US public expected him to veto, Obama spent 50 minutes on the phone with Mahmoud Abbas begging him to set the resolution aside. Obama promised to take unprecedented steps against Israel in return for Abbas's agreement to stand down. But Abbas rejected his appeal.

Not only did Abbas defy the wishes of the most pro-Palestinian president ever to occupy the White House, Abbas told the whole world about how he defied Obama.

Abbas's humiliation of Obama was only the first volley in the Fatah leader's campaign against the US. Abbas, Salam Fayyad and their PA ministers have sent paid demonstrators into the street to protest against America. They announced a boycott of American diplomats and journalists. They have called for a boycott of American products. They have scheduled a "Day of Rage" against America for Friday after mosque prayers.

While excoriating Obama and the US, the PA is actively wooing Hamas. On Wednesday, the PA accepted the legitimacy of Hamas control over Gaza. Three-and-a-half years after Hamas wrested control over Gaza from Fatah in a bloody coup, on Wednesday Fayyad said that the PA is willing to end its objection to Hamas control over the area if Hamas agrees to participate in the general elections Abbas has scheduled for September.

At the same time as he publicly beseeched Hamas to join forces with Fatah, Fayyad announced that the PA is willing to forgo US financial assistance if that assistance continues to come with political strings attached. The only real string attached to US aid is the stipulation that no US financial assistance can be used to finance Hamas.

THE PA'S announced willingness to end its receipt of US aid is by far its boldest move to date. With the Arab world going up in smoke, Fatah officials know they cannot expect to receive any significant funding from Arab states for the foreseeable future. That makes them entirely dependent on US and Europe.

And make no mistake, the PA budget is entirely a creation of foreign aid. The PA is the largest foreign aid recipient in the world. Last year, it received $1.8 billion in foreign assistance.

US direct assistance accounted for $550 million, or nearly a third of that amount. The US gave the PA another $268m. in indirect assistance through UNRWA. UNRWA is the UN agency devoted exclusively to providing welfare benefits to the Palestinians while subordinating itself to the Palestinian political agenda.

Without US assistance, the PA would cease to be a political factor in the region. So by offering to forgo the aid, Fayyad, Abbas and their colleagues are essentially threatening to commit political suicide.

The Palestinians' declared readiness to forgo US aid is all the more remarkable when compared to Israel's refusal to countenance the thought of forgoing or even cutting back the assistance it receives from the US. Whereas the Palestinian economy will collapse without US assistance, were Israel to forgo the $3b. in military assistance it receives every year from Washington, the move would have little impact on the economy.

Economic analyses of US military assistance have noted that several factors degrade the value of the aid. The US requires Israel to spend 75 percent of the assistance in the US. Israel's inability to open its purchases to competitive bidding in the world market has forced it to pay inflated prices for much of what it buys.

So, too, by buying US weapons systems, Israel has harmed its own military industries, which are blocked from selling or developing systems for the IDF contractors.

Moreover, because the US has tied its aid to Egypt to its aid to Israel and justified its military aid to Jordan and Lebanon through its military assistance to Israel, by accepting the aid, Israel is enabling its neighbors to upgrade their military capabilities. Their upgraded military capabilities in turn force Israel to invest still more resources in its defense budget to maintain its qualitative edge against its US subsidized neighbors.

With all the hidden costs the military assistance entails, it is reasonable to discount the actual value of the aid by 50%. That is, the actual value of annual US military assistance is about $1.5b.

The direct military cost of the Second Lebanon War is estimated at $2.2b. The direct military cost of Operation Cast Lead is estimated at $1.4b. The actual costs of both wars to the Israeli economy were several times higher.

Those who claim that Israel cannot manage without US military aid ignore the fact that neither of these wars had any discernible impact on the economy.

The political cost Israel has paid for US military assistance has been astronomical. As a recent study of US military assistance by the Jerusalem Institute for Market Studies demonstrated, the psychological impact of the US aid on Israeli and American leaders alike has had a disastrous impact on the relations between the two states and impaired their ability to understand the actual strategic rationale of their alliance. Israeli leaders have developed a subservient mentality towards the Americans and the Americans have forgotten that a strong Israel is the US's most valuable strategic asset in the region.

THE PALESTINIANS' expressed willingness to forgo their assistance from the US is no doubt a bluff. And Congress would do well to call their bluff and cancel US assistance to the PA.

Yet their behavior presents Israel with an important lesson about the fundamentals of diplomacy that appear lost on our leaders.

The Palestinians understand the rules of diplomacy far better than Israel does. Israel believes that diplomacy is about getting other governments to be nice to us. Palestinians understand that diplomacy is a nonviolent means of weakening your enemies and expanding your own power. They also understand that the starting point for any effective diplomatic strategy is a reality-based assessment of other government's interests.

As the revolutions throughout the region show, in the real world, the Arabs do not care about the Palestinians. Europeans and leftist Americans care about the Palestinians. European leaders need to support the Palestinians for domestic political reasons. US leaders support the Palestinians to maintain good relations with Europe and with the American Left.

Recognizing this, the likes of Abbas and Fayyad understand that no matter what they say or do, the West will probably not abandon them. Europeans need them to continue carrying out their political war against Israel because that is what their constituents demand. US leaders will continue to support them because they follow Europe's lead.

On the other hand, given their newfound power, PA leaders have to bend over backwards to appease Hamas and Iran if they wish to survive.

Since they rightly assess that the West needs them more than they need the West, not only are the Palestinians unwilling to pay any price for maintaining Western support for them. They are willing to initiate ugly confrontations with the US and humiliate Obama in order to win the approval of Hamas and Iran.

Facing this reality, Israel's best bet is to initiate a few confrontations of its own to demonstrate its strategic importance to the US and Europe. With the conflagrations raging in the Arab world essentially making its argument that a strong Israel is imperative for the West, Israel should be going on the offensive against the Palestinians and the international Left that supports them.

But instead of pointing out the truth, Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu and his colleagues maintain their posture as supplicants to Washington, making concession after concession in exchange for further abuse in the hopes of avoiding a confrontation.

For instance, Netanyahu has defied his own party and broken his word to the public by maintaining an undeclared freeze on Jewish building in Jerusalem, Judea and Samaria. Since January 2010, Netanyahu has systematically denied Jews building permits in the area in the hopes of appeasing Obama.

And how has Obama repaid Israel for our government's willingness to deny Jews their civil rights? The Obama administration has branded all Jewish communities in post-1967 Jerusalem, Judea and Samaria as "illegitimate," and blamed Israel for the absence of peace in the region.

As our region is consumed by the flames of rebellion and revolution, the challenges and threats Israel faces multiply by the day. In these new and trying times, our leaders must shed their failed concepts of statecraft based on weakness and adopt new ones founded on strength. The PA is playing a bad hand wisely.

We are playing a good hand foolishly.

Brilliant, as usual.

The Quartet can see that the window for bringing Israel down by their peace is coming to a close.
What if the dumbed down of Israel wake up is their great fear.
Today in panic mode they have called for a fast resumption worthless diplomacy, worthless words and worthless agreements between Israel and the
Fatah,Hamas Military Division's of coming destruction.
With their loyal poodle's Netanyahu and Barak well trained to attack fellow Jews they know this may be their last chance to exterminate the State of Israel before the sheep
headed for slaughter awaken to the second holocaust is now breathing down their necks.
We can expect to see more smiling Hillarys,Obama's and the Dennis Ross treacherous betrayers visiting Israel in the coming days
to sell their deadly poison to the naive Jews about to be slaughtered for their peace.
I'm surprised an uprising hasn't begun against the devious fraud in the pocket of the Globalists and their evil agenda, the Capo Prime Minister of Israel yet ?

This past week China and Russia moved to dump their large holdings of U.S.Treasury Bills.
They know something the subservients of Israel do not know.
Trusting in a broken reed about to be smoked is extremely foolish but then Israel has been stuck on stupid for some time now.

"Europeans need them to continue carrying out their political war against Israel because that is what their constituents demand"

I live in the UK and count myself a friend of Israel, but I see this differently

Most ordinary people in the UK are indifferent about Israel. TGose who support you are mainly evangelical Christians. Those who voice opposition are the loud minority: politicians; unions; academics; the media

The vast majority of British people are angry about the imposition of Sharia on our society, and feel totally ignored

My strong suggestion, and I think this builds on what you say Caroline, is that Israel should be more direct in its words and actions vis a vis the Islamic threat

For example, when the BBC misrepresent the actions of the IDF in defending Israel, why not make the BBC the story ? Most Brits hate the ultra-left BBC with a vengeance. However, what I usually hear is some Israeli spokesman seeking to defend Israel

Time to go on the attack I think

Israel will never go on the attack. It's the usual galut mentality.

Just building on the point I made before...

Israel needs to reach "over the heads" of the BBC and UK (and US) Government. It needs a new communications strategy that links itself with the fight against Islam. I believe many Europeans and Americans would identify with that

How to achieve this ?

1. You need an Israeli "Al Jazeera" to form a conduit that tells the story without recourse to BBC/CNN bias. Directly refute and analyse biased reporting

2. Start to expose the roots of Islamism in the Europe and the USA - with a few notable exceptions our domestic media avoid this like the plague

3. I hope this doesn't sound patronising, but stop apologising for who you are as a Nation. Israel leads the fight against Islamic terrorism. You have many friends. Be bold.

4. Directly counter the lies put about by left-wing organisations concerning Israel

5. Include some positive content about (for example) Israel's record in technology, aid programmes, history etc

Once you start out on this route you will make the deception the story, and the average man in the street will have to think if the BBC/CNN are telling the truth

What has happened to our strength and vitality in the face of evil? Have we forgotten our promise of "never again?" Israel is not just the Jewish State. She is the heart and soul of every Jew who lives today, our past, present and future.

Talk about being dealt a good hand!

Iran has handed Israel a chance to score an important victory over the mullahs. Let’s just say the mullahs are really as stupid as they look for putting their navy in such an untenable situation.

The only moral purpose of a government is to protect the rights of its citizens. Since the Islamic Republic of Iran is a gross violator of its citizen’s rights, is has no right to exist. It is a totalitarian state run by unrepentant gangsters. As an agent of that totalitarian state the Iranian navy is a pirate entity that is a menace to one and all so its vessels can be engaged and sunk in their home ports, in the Mediterranean Sea or any where in between.

If Israel, which is the primary target of the Iranian navy in the Mediterranean, cannot bring itself to sink these ships outright it must make perfectly clear to the world what behavior would necessitate their sinking. For example, approaching within 100 miles of the Israeli coast, interfering with the blockade of Hamas or delivering nuclear materials to Syria.

It is obvious that mullahs intend for their ships to create mayhem for Israel but the ships are sitting ducks. Israel has been dealt a winning hand. Don’t screw it up.

'Iran has handed Israel a chance to score an important victory over the mullahs'

That was a good joke.I had to get up off the floor.

Haven't you figured out ,Israel has been neutered for the peace.
Hillary says no and Bibi can only say ;'Yes mother dear.'

Where are the NO men ?
Real leaders instead of the steady stream of weak followers ?

Getting back to reality,Bibi will do nothing without his Master's permission.

Did you notice the weak response by him and Barak to the Grad's fired into Beersheva last week ?

This is because Israel is restrained and only allowed to use little firecracker rockets at night when the Hamas leadership have all gone home to their wifes and then we have the occasional show of hitting a car as Israel's 'harsh' response.
Israel and her 'harsh' response have become a big joke, almost as big as the Barak,Bibi jokers who exude weakness.
That is why Iran has moved closer.
They smell the weakness and are taking advantage of the 2 losers.

There is so much fantasy and fiction in this post... it's astonishing.

Like Neil Turner, I'm also a Brit and am in complete agreement with his comments.

I really resent the politicians, media and so-called intelligentsia who do not speak for me in so many instances - not least their attitude towards Israel.

Like Neil, I wish Israel would develop a positive PR strategy. We now have Stand With Us in the UK, but apart from this and the voices of Mel Phillips, Douglas Murray, Robin Shepherd, a handful of bloggers and organisations that, as yet, have still to make their mark on the ordinary Brit (e.g. Jose Maria's 'Friends of Israel')there is nothing much going on to counter the 'anti' brigade. They grow stronger for lack of any real opposition.

As individuals there are many Brits doing what they can to support Israel and we may even be quite successful in our own small way. But, when all is said and done, we are just individuals commenting on blogs, turning out for the few tiny rallies and speaking to people around us - but we aren't media giants with the ability to inform on the scale required!

We'll carry on standing with Israel, Caroline, but we could do with a bit of PR!

A talkback worth repeating from an article at A7

2. Games, nothing but games - while your country spirals into disaster
Feb 23, 2011 was a historical day in Jewish history. The National Union proposed a bill in the Knesset for the annexation of Judea/Samaria. Then two terrible things happened:
1) The vote was 49 against, 4 in favor (National Union) with many Likud MKs leaving the room before the vote.
2) Complete silence in the country in the wake of this act of renunciation to the land.

First the heartland will be gone. Then the rest of Israel. Till then we'll continue to hear about issues that outrage Israelis. But no realistic plan to do the only courageous act needed at this moment: Immediate annexation based on int'l law and the historical right of the Jewish people to their land. Indifference to the Feb. 23 vote means that any further complaints by Israelis about the land situation and mistreatment by USA/EU/UN is nothing but an empty intellectual game. I don't believe you anymore!

It is a deep profound pathological form of Stockholm Syndrome - which almost all Jewish people are experiencing to varying degrees, and that, for at least the past two thousand years, almost all Jewish people have experienced to varying degrees. It is lethal - lethal to the Jewish people - and it, indirectly, via the genocidally anti-Jewish, totalitarian, supremacist, attackers of the Jewish people, is lethal to the whole world.

The leaders of the government of Israel *must* - in order to protect Israel from genocide, and in order to protect the well-being of the whole world - go on the verbal offensive against the vicious genocidal racist lying Western and Islamic-Supremacist attackers of the Jewish people.

The reason that the West is colluding with the modern Islamic supremacist political movement (which began in the 1920's and which is a revival of genocidally anti-Jewish authoritative (orthodox) Islam, with the addition of culturally Christian-European conspiracy-theory-ideology about the Jewish people) is that Western academics, and journalists, and politicians, believe, and are propagating, a perverse obscene untrue narrative about the situation which is a narrative that is constituted by lies that vilify Israel and that obfuscate the reality of the situation - the situation which is the Islamic supremacist, and Western, racist intendedly genocidal, currently over 60-year-old, war against Israel, the country of the Jewish people.

The (Evil, Lethal, Fatal) Perverse Untrue Narrative That Was Propagated (by The Members of The "Elite" Social Classes of Western Countries) in, and Believed in, Western countries in the 1930's:

"The Evil, World-Controlling, Exaggerating, Warmongering, Jews; and the Noble, Wronged, Beatific Germans"

The (Evil, Lethal, Fatal) Perverse Untrue Narrative That Is Being Propagated (by The Members of The "Elite" Social Classes (Academic, Journalistic, Industrialist, Financier, Political, Classes) of Western Countries, (Including Deranged, Immoral, Fear-of-Being-Hated-by-Non-Jewish-People-Driven, Egocentrism-Driven, Severe-Stockholm-Syndrome-Affected, Jewish people)) in, and Believed in, Western Countries in this Era:

"The Evil, World-Controlling, Lying, Warmongering, Murderous Jews Who Are Persecuting The Innocent, Wronged, Beatific "Palestinian" Arabs Who Are Being Avenged By The Noble Savage Muslim Warriors"

In order to protect Israel from genocide, and in order to protect the well-being of the whole world, the leaders of the government of Israel *must* communicate - mindfully, clearly, firmly, tell - the factual, currently 94-year, history, and current reality, of the situation to the television news media of Western countries, and directly to the leaders of the governments of Western countries - and to the television news media of Israel.

Start at the beginning.

Facts That Must Be Communicated

Approximately 2,000 years ago, the Romans committed genocide against the Jewish (Yehoudi) people and destroyed Judea (Yehouda), the country of the Jewish people. After the Romans committed genocide against the Jewish people and destroyed Judea (Yehouda), the Romans renamed Judea (Yehouda), and neighboring Sameria (Shomron), to Falastina, in reference to the then-extinct, Greco, sea-faring, people, the Philistines, who, several hundred years earlier, had attacked the country of the Jewish people, which, at that time, was divided, from the original country of the Jewish people, Israel (Yisrael), into two kingdoms - Yehouda and Yisrael, and which subsequently diminished into only Yehouda. Shomron had been a part of Yisrael. The name "Palestine" is the English spelling and pronunciation of the word "Falastina". For several hundred years, until 1917, the area of land that the Romans renamed to "Falastina" was part of Islamic Ottoman Turkey. Until 1948, the term "Palestinian" was always only a term that was used by European people to refer only to Jewish people who were living in the area of land that the Romans renamed to "Falastina".

In 1917, during World War I, Britain took, from Germany-allied Turkey, the area of land that was constituted by what is now Jordan, and by what is now Israel, and by what is now called "The West Bank" (which is, in fact, Yehouda and Shomron), and by what is now called "The Gaza Strip".

In 1917, after Britain took, from Turkey, that area of land, some few British officials who were sympathetic to the Jewish people, and who were sympathetic to the Jewish people who were engaged in the Jewish liberation an national self-determination movement - the Zionist movement - issued the Balfour Declaration, which declared that the Jewish National Home would be established in that area of land.

The Zionist movement was the Jewish liberation and national self-determination movement. The goal of the Zionist movement was the re-founding of the country of the Jewish people as the refuge and home of the Jewish people. The Zionist movement began in the late 1800's, and was founded by Theodor Herzl. Theodor Herzl was a Jewish-Hungarian man who, as a journalist in France, in the late 1890's, witnessed the framing of, and false charging of, and unjust trial of, and false conviction of, and public official ceremonial humiliation of, and the subsequent non-chalant aquital of, a young Jewish-French army captain, Alfred Dreyfus, in France, and witnessed the mass anti-Jewish hysteria that occurred in France as a result of those events. At that time, for approximately 2,000 years, European people had (as a part of the religion that they adhered to, Christianity) wrongly perceived, and hated, and falsely accused of horrific crimes, and repeatedly mass-murdered, and made, and enforced, unjust oppressive persecutorial laws against, and treated with intransigent contempt, the Jewish people who were living in Europe. The Dreyfus Affair, which occurred in the late 1800's in France, whose society, at that time, was supposedly the most civilized, and least racist anti-Jewish society in Europe, demonstrated to Theodor Herzl and to many other Jewish people in Europe that the Jewish people, in order to live as free non-persecuted people, needed to have, and live in, and govern themselves in, and be able to defend themselves in, their own country, in the same way that other national groups of people have, and live in, and govern themselves in, and are able to defend themselves in, their own countries.

The term Zionist is based on the word Zion, which is the English spelling and pronunciation of the word Tsiyon (pronounced: tseeYOHN), which is the name that, approximately 3,000 years ago, the Jewish people called the area of land (the hill and an area of land around that hill) on which the founding city, Jerusalem (Yerushalayim), of the founding country, Israel (Yisrael), of the Jewish (Yehoudi) people sits, and was built, by the Jewish people, approximately 3,000 years ago.

In 1919, Emir Faisal ibn Husseini and Haim Weizmann signed the Faisal-Weizmann Agreement to create one Arab state in, and one Jewish State in, that area of land.

In 1920, British officials named that area of land The British Mandate of Palestine.

In 1920, Amin al-Husseini incited Muslim Arab murderous riots against Jewish people in The British Mandate of Palestine.

In 1921, British officials appointed Amin al-Husseini to the position of Grand Mufti of Jerusalem.

In 1924, Britain created the Arab stated of Transjordan in The British Mandate of Palestine and excluded Transjordan from the terms of the Faisal-Weizmann Agreement, in violation of the terms of the Faisal-Weizmann Agreement.

In 1935, in the British Mandate of Palestine, Amin al-Husseini and his family created the Nazi-influenced, Nazi-allied, Palestinian Arab Party, with which Amin al-Husseini and his family created the terrorist youth crops militia al-Futuwwa (which Amin al-HUsseini called the Nazi scouts), with which, during the 1930's, Amin al-Husseini murdered Arab leaders in the British Mandate of Palestine who opposed him.

From 1941 to 1945, Amin al-Husseini resided in Germany, and was an adjoined official of the Nazi regime of Germany, and was a co-architect of the genocide of the Jewish people in Europe by the Nazi regime of Germany.

In 1946, Britain granted autonomy to Transjordan and Transjordan was renamed Jordan.

In 1947, the then-newly-founded United Nations proposed the creation of one Arab state in, and one Jewish state in, the part of the British Mandate of Palestine that had not become Jordan. The Jewish leaders of the Jewish community in the British Mandate of Palestine accepted that proposal. The Arab League, representing the Arab leaders in the Middle East, refused that proposal.

In 1948, the United Nations recognized Israel as a country by a majority vote. Britain abstained from that vote.

On May 14, 1948, at a press conference in Cairo, (reported on by the New York Times, on May 16, 1948), one day after Israel was officially recognized as a country in the United Nations by a majority vote, Azzam Pasha, Secretary General of the Arab League, declared "Jihad", Islamic religious war, against Israel, and stated that the Muslim Arab states rejected the partition, into one Arab state and one Jewish state, of the part of the British Mandate of Palestine that had not become Jordan, and stated that the Muslim Arab states intended to set up an Arab "United State of Palestine". At that press conference, Azzam Pasha stated, about the declared planned Muslim Arab attack on Israel: "This will be a war of extermination and a momentous massacre which will be spoken of like the Mongolian massacres and the Crusades". Afterward, Arab leaders instructed Arab people in Israel to leave Israel, and told lies, saying that Israeli soldiers had committed atrocities against Arab people in Israel, which were lies that frightened many Arab people in Israel, and which caused many Arab people in Israel to flee from Israel.

In 1948, several days after Israel was officially recognized as a country in the United Nations by a majority vote, the armies of several Arab states, joined by British soldiers, attacked Israel. Amin al-Husseini, as the head of the Arab Higher Committee, coordinated that attack on Israel by those armies of those several Arab states.

In 1949, the army of Israel defeated those armies of those Arab states.

Amin al-Husseini was the mentor of, and an uncle of, Egyptian-born Yasser Arafat (Mohammed Yasser Abdel Rahman Abdel Raouf Arafat al-Qudwa al-Husseini). In 1958, in Egypt, Yasser Arafat, under the guidance of Amin al-Husseini, founded Fatah.

From 1949 until 1967, Jordan occupied (annexed as part of itself) Judea and Sameria (Yehouda and Shomron) - which Jordan renamed to "The West Bank" - referring to that area of land as "the west bank" of the Jordan river.

From 1949 until 1967, Egypt occupied (annexed as part of itself) what is now called "The Gaza Strip".

The 1948 Muslim Arab attack on Israel created 800,000 to 1,000,000 Jewish refugees from Muslim states in the Middle East, where the families of those Jewish refugees had lived, for many hundreds of years, as second-class, and third-class, citizens. The Jewish refugees from Muslim states in the Middle East found refuge in Israel and became citizens of Israel, and the still living members of, and the descendants of, those Jewish refugees, constitute over 50 percent of the Jewish population of Israel. The still living members of, and the descendants of, those Jewish refugees refer to themselves as Mizrahi, which means "Eastern" in Hebrew.

The 1948 Muslim Arab attack on Israel created 450,000 to 700,000 Arab refugees from Israel. Very many of those Arab refugees had migrated to the British Mandate of Palestine, seeking work in, and finding work in, the Yishuv - the then-thriving Jewish community in the British Mandate of Palestine - only a few years before the Muslim Arab attack on Israel in 1948. The period of time which the United Nations defines as being the period of time that an Arab person who fled from Israel before, or during, or who was expelled from Israel during, the 1948 Muslim Arab attack on Israel, had to have lived in pre-Israel before the 1948 Muslim Arab attack on Israel in order to be defined as a refugee is *two years*. The Arab refugees from the 1948 Muslim Arab attack on Israel, and the, currently several million, descendants of the Arab refugees from the Muslim Arab attack on Israel, began to be called the 'Palestinian' Arab refugees - the 'Palestinians' - in the 1960's, and do not live in Israel, and are not citizens of Israel, and live in what is now called "The West Bank", which is governed by Fatah-PLO-PalestinianAuthority, and in what is now called "The Gaza Strip", which is governed by Hamas, and in refugee camps in Muslim Arab states, and have been kept as refugees for over 60 years by Arab leaders and by the leaders of the governments of Western countries.

Since the end of World War II, there have been tens of millions of refugees in the world, almost all of whom have been relocated to, and absorbed into, the countries to which they fled or were expelled (such as several million ethnically German people who, immediately after World War II, were expelled from the Sudetenland of Poland, and who were, subsequently, relocated to, and absorbed into, Germany).

The still living members of, and the descendants of, the Arab people who did not flee from Israel immediately before, nor during, and who were not among the few Arab people who were expelled from Israel during, the 1948 Muslim Arab attack on Israel, live in Israel and are citizens of Israel, and constitute approximately 20 percent of the population of Israel.

Approximately 20 percent of the citizenry of Israel are Arab.

Approximately 80 percent of the Arab citizenry of Israel are Muslim.

Approximately 20 percent of the Arab citizenry of Israel are, in some cases, Druze, and, in other cases, Christian.

All citizens of Israel have equal rights by the law in Israel, and have equal protection under the law in Israel. Israel is a free liberal democratic country.

Israel is one of the smallest countries in the world. The land area of Israel is approximately 1 percent of the total land area of the Middle East. The land area of Israel is approximately the size of New Hampshire (one of the smaller of the 52 states in the United States of America), and the land area of Israel is approximately the size of Venezuela.

The population of Israel is approximately 7.5 million people - 7.5 million citizens of Israel.

There are over 20 Muslim Arab states in the Middle East.

There are several European states in the world.

There are 56 Muslim states in the world.

There are several officially Christian states in the world.

There are many national states in the world (Thailand, Japan, over 20 Arab states, several European states, etc.).

There is only one Jewish state in the world - Israel.

The government of the United States of America gives 3 billion dollars of financial aid per year to Israel.

The government of the United States of America gives a total of over 3 billion dollars of financial aid per year to Muslim Arab states in the Middle East. The government of the United States of America gives 2 billion dollars of financial aid per year to Egypt alone. The government of the United States gives more military aid to the Saudi family dictatorial Islamic regime of Saudi Arabia than the government of the United States gives to any other state in the world.

The largest, and controlling, voting bloc in the United Nations, and the controlling body of the United Nations, is the OIC (the Organization of the Islamic Conference), which is a coalition of 57 Muslim governments.

The Human Rights Council of the United Nations is headed by the representatives of the regimes of totalitarian Muslim states.

Totalitarian petroleum-producing Muslim Arab states in the Middle East, such as Saudi Arabia, are some of the wealthiest states in the world. The total petroleum revenue income of petroleum-producing Muslim Arab states in the Middle East is several hundred billion dollars per year. Petroleum is the foundational commodity of the economies of all of the Western countries of the world.

Israel produces no petroleum, and receives no revenue from petroleum trade.

A clarification to my previous comment:

In 1919, Emir Faisal ibn Husseini and Haim Weizmann signed the Faisal-Weizmann Agreement to create one Arab state in, and one Jewish State in, the area of land that was constituted by what is now Jordan, and by what is now Israel, and by what is now called "The West Bank" (which is, in fact, Yehouda and Shomron), and by what is now called "The Gaza Strip".

Israel's appeasement has done its enemies has brought no rewards - quite the contrary, it has encouraged them in their barbarity.

The real tragedy is that Israel, in the process, has lost the opportunity to acquire strategic defensive land.

If in the eighties, Israel had openly announced, that for each act of terrorism against Israel, would lead not just to retaliation, but the permanent non-negotiable incorporation of parts of Judea and Samaria into Israel, it would have stopped the Jihad immediately. The Jihadis in Hamas would also have discouraged their Marxist allies to stop provoking Israel, for that would lead to loss of even more territory.

Such a policy would have earned Israel not just respect, but strategic as well as historic land, that should be in historic Israel. It would make clear to America and Europe that Israel was not a pushover but had to be treated with respect.

Frankly, Israel’s present dire predicament lies not with Hamas or the Lefty Westerners, but with its past leaders, and those who elected them.
